Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) was a Victorian realist novelist and poet, renowned for his criticism of social constraints and his fatalistic view of life. Before becoming a full-time writer, he trained as an architect—an experience that heavily influenced A Pair of Blue Eyes. Hardy is best known for masterpieces like Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Far from the Madding Crowd. This early novel is essential for understanding the heart of the man behind the legends, as it mirrors his own courtship of his first wife, Emma.
